Hellooooo, Union! Nurses Begin To Unionize Texas — Single-Payer Healthcare On Horizon

Single-Payer Healthcare On Horizon

DALLAS, Texas Got free healthcare?

No?

Then, you’ll probably want to consider supporting the right of nurses to unionize.

Why?

“Nurses are going to lead the fight for healthcare reform,” said Gene Lantz, a North Texas organizer with Jobs with Justice, a nationwide coalition of labor, religious, student, and community organizations.

That was a key message after a free DVD screening of the documentary “SiCKO” at Oak Cliff Methodist Church in Dallas last Wednesday night.

The screening was one of five in North Texas, 19 in Texas, and hundreds across the nation, sponsored in part by Democracy for America, a liberal-progressive outfit born from the ashes of Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign.

Now, the more radical attendees needed no film director, Michael Moore, telling them what’s wrong with the Amerikan healthcare system.

Nit-picky world-travelers might also catch the subtle inaccuracies made by that stinking, fat, gringo, Canada-loving Yankee either.

The currency exchange between Cuban pesos to U.S. dollars, for instance, wasn’t on the money, or so I’m told.

But the bigger issue still remained clear for conscientious citizens like Bandele Tyehimba.

“We need free healthcare in America. It’s going to be one of the unifying efforts that we can see a lot of change in this society,” said the owner of the Pan-African Connection, an African arts and crafts resource center in Dallas.

“I’m tired of seeing so many people drinking these energy drinks. People are constantly running,” he continued. “We’re a very tired society. We could use some rest.”
