Perry, Legislators Throw Away $500 Million Trying To Privatize Social Security

“The great minds of Texas,” as the governor likes to call his special committee cronies, have tossed away more taxpayer dollars on an “innovative” plan that would privatize the Social Security Program. Too bad that, like many of their other plans, it was initiated by the poor judgment of special interests who salivated at the thought of a new resource for unlimited income.

Little Miracles Of Spring

Little Miracles Of Spring

Country dwellers, surrounded by nature, are constantly confronted with the curiosities and surprises of life. With the coming of spring, these little miracles multiply geometrically. First come the warming of the air and the earth, the showing of green shoots and flowering bulbs, the greening of winter-dead trees and other plants. The ground comes alive with new growth, especially if one has put in years of time and effort, as we have. This spring I finally documented (in photographs) everything as it emerged, both wild and planted by the resident humans.

When I saw my first hummingbird of the season, I put out a feeder. We were pleased to see the little guy (and a couple of friends) visit immediately.

When my daughter arrived for a rare, long visit a few weeks ago, our large, shallow water tank was dry, as it has been for two years of drought. I reminded Becca of her childhood when, during spring visits to the ranch, we would find the tank full

I was saddened to learn last week that the National Cheerleading Championship team, Wichita State University, was disqualified, thereby losing its title as “National Champion.” It was discovered that they cheated by using a cheerleader who was not enrolled in the University. It upset me not because I follow cheerleading competitions

Rayburn Worked His Magic Behind The Scenes

Rayburn Worked His Magic Behind The Scenes

A White House errand boy delivered a handwritten message from the President to the Speaker of the House on May 7, 1949.

Sam Rayburn left the floor earlier in the day feeling that his passionate defense of an administration bill had been near perfect. But if anyone could find fault with his remarks, it was Harry Truman.

“Sam, you made a wonderful speech this afternoon,” read the note. “You choked me up so I could hardly talk.”

Mr. Sam began his 54-year career in public service while still in law school at the University of Texas. Confident that legislative duties would not conflict with his studies, the folks back in Bonham elected their down-to-earth favorite son to the Texas House in 1906.

As The Fog Thickens

As The Fog Thickens

Every war creates and carries its own peculiar fog.

The first casualty being, in every case, truth.

Because no initial blow was ever struck in anger without deliberate preexistent exculpation for those responsible.

Therefore, truth is invariably victimized even prior to that first digression into savagery.

For war is nothing but a regression from all that mankind has learned, all which we have achieved back into that barbaric horde from which our most ancient ancestors evolved.

Letters To The Editor

To The Editor:

The President Endangers The Lives Of American Troops in Iraq

In his zeal to win at all costs, Mr. Bush in a presentation yesterday publicly displayed a very large map for media cameras that pinpointed with red triangles the locations of American-Iraqi security posts in Baghdad. This was an irresponsible act that provided al Qaeda, the Shiite militias, and the Sunni insurgents with vital information to target U.S. military and to inflict more death and long term disabilities on American troops.

He deliberately violated his dictum of “support the troops” in favor of a political opportunity. It is now known from reliable sources that the new troop surge in Iraq and the call for a war czar are strategies to prolong American involvement in Iraq to run down the clock so that the next president bears the blame for the ending of this ill-fated war.

Dear Editor,

The House and Senate have exercised their legal prerogative to affect U.S. policy by placing timetable restrictions on continued funding of the Iraq war. President Bush has mischaracterized this action as “micromanaging.” Indeed, it would be micromanaging if Congress told the generals “how” to fight the war, but it is Congress
