Sultry Singer/Songwriter Explores Variety Of Styles In ‘Another Life’
WHITBY, Ontario, Canada “Acoustic Rootsy Folk” is how contemporary singer/songwriter Lenore describes her music.
Compared to Marianne Faithfull, Melanie, and Nico, her lyrics reflect the influence of her songwriting heroes Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. The music is a uniqe blend of folk, rock, country, and blues, with a sense of humor apparent throughout.
Her latest CD, “Another Life,” explores a variety of styles, including the poignant “The Old Man,” the highly popular politics/war track, “The Hippie Song,” which in late July ranked number 86 on Neil Young’s list of anti-war songs that lists over 3,000 songs by current artists <http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/lwwsongspage.html>, and “Just One More,” a haunting song about poverty.
Other tracks include “Happy Anniversary, an upbeat, funny song about marriage; “The Bully,” a somber ballad about childhood/parenting; “Nevermore,” a quirky song about letting go; “The Pirate,” an upbeat, playful song about desire; the slow “Crowded Sidewalks,” introspective social commentary; “Ships In The Night,” a wistful tune about attraction; “I’ll Make You Smile,” a sassy song about loving; “My God,” a pensive song about spirituality and death; “Take My Lovin’ Seriously,” a bluesy shuffle with a sultry mood, about passion; and “Paris,” a hopeful song about following dreams.
Lenore released her self-titled debut CD in 1997 and her follow-up, Summer Dancing, in 2002, both of which received airplay on indie radio shows internationally. “Another Life” is an all-acoustic album that is a reflection of her live shows. It was produced by roots veteran Paul Mills (Stan Rogers, Ron Hynes).
Lenore has won numerous awards and nominations for her vocals and songwriting.
She was born, Lenore Elaine, in Rossland, B.C., Canada, was raised in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) and Oshawa, Ontario and then lived in Toronto while going to school and working.
“I had a career in Personnel Management in Toronto before gleefully quitting work to stay home and raise a family…my long term goal was to go back to school and study law so that I could eventually get involved in politics,” she explains.
“I also decided to fulfill an age-old dream and learn how to play the guitar – as soon as I’d figured out three chords I wrote my first song and discovered that my notebooks of half-finished poetry were full of great hooks – my lifelong writing hobby connected with my lifelong love of music (see influences) and I realized that I’d much rather spend my life performing songs (political and otherwise) than anything else.”
She says her early heroes were Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, and Simon & Garfunkel. “And then, Bob Dylan, John Prine, The Eagles, CCR, The Band, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead (to name a few). And, of course, there’s Bruce.”
