McGovern Backs Impeachment — Case ‘Is Far Stronger’ Than The One Against Nixon
Case ‘Is Far Stronger’ Than The One Against Nixon
WASHINGTON, D.C. The former U.S. presidential candidate George McGovern backed the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney.
McGovern wrote in the Washington Post that the case “is far stronger” than the one against President Richard Nixon.
McGovern lost his big for president on the Democratic ticket against Nixon and his vice president Spiro Agnew in 1972.
Nixon resigned in embarrassment during the Watergate scandal two years later.
McGovern wrote that he backed the impeachment of Nixon though made no public statement about it for fear of looking like a vengeful loser.
The former senator said evidence against the Bush administration includes its lies concerning the pretext for the invasion of Iraq, the illegal wiretapping of citizens, and the torture and imprisonment of suspects without charges.
